okay… first things first → ITR = Income Tax Return.
every earning person in India (salary, business, freelancer, student with income) has to file it.
why? → because govt. wants record. you show income, pay tax (if needed), claim refund (if extra deducted).
uhm… don’t panic. sounds heavy? actually easy.
i’ll break it down → step by step. like notes.
Step 1 – Collect Documents (before login)
oh… don’t rush to portal.
first collect papers. else you’ll be stuck.
- PAN card (mandatory)
- Aadhaar card (linked to PAN)
- Form 16 (salary slip from employer if you are salaried)
- Bank statements
- TDS certificates (Form 26AS from TRACES website)
- Investment proofs (ELSS, LIC, PF, PPF, tuition fees, housing loan interest etc.)
- Rent receipts (if claiming HRA)
- Other income proof (FD interest, freelance income, crypto, stocks, mutual funds)
👉 without these, you’ll be lost midway.
Step 2 – Choose the Right ITR Form
uhm… this part confuses most people.
“which ITR form do I choose?”
relax.
- ITR-1 (Sahaj) → salary income + 1 house property + other income (like FD interest) + total income < 50L
- ITR-2 → if you have capital gains, foreign assets, more houses
- ITR-3 → business/professional income
- ITR-4 (Sugam) → presumptive taxation for small biz/freelancers (income up to 2cr under sections 44AD, 44ADA, 44AE)
okay… check your category. choose right.
Step 3 – Login to Income Tax Portal
now go to → https://www.incometax.gov.in
login with PAN (as user ID) + password + captcha.
first time? register with Aadhaar/PAN.
Step 4 – Filing Options
two ways:
- Online – directly on portal (simple cases).
- Offline Utility – download ITR utility (Excel/JSON), fill, then upload. (better for complex cases).
…and so on.
